If your car’s engine is growling at you, it could be that the alternator is going bad. As an aside, this is also a sign that the water pump is going bad, but we are going to talk about the alternator in this blog post. The alternator is the part in your vehicle’s electrical system that generates the voltage the automobile needs for its power accessories and components. Aside from growling noises, the signs below are an indication that your automobile needs a new alternator.
Dead Battery
One auto part that uses the voltage that the alternator generates is the battery. The voltage recharges the battery as it discharges. This ensures that you always have a working battery under the hood. If you have had to jump-start the battery frequently to get your engine started, it’s possible that the alternator is the culprit. You may also need to replace your battery if it is too old.
Dim Headlights
Another problem that occurs with a dying alternator is dim headlights, interior lights, and taillights. If the alternator is producing an unsteady stream of voltage, the lights may flicker. Unfortunately, these light problems will not be resolved until you replace the alternator.
Hot Electricity
Sometimes, when an alternator malfunctions, it actually produces too much electricity. When this happens, your vehicle slides will be extraordinarily bright and you may smell hot electricity in the automobile and in the engine. You may smell burning wire insulation or burning wires.
Misfiring/Stalling
The alternator can also create engine performance problems by failing to produce enough electricity for the spark plugs. When this happens, your engine will start to misfire and stall frequently. Unfortunately, this can make driving your vehicle unpredictable and frustrating.
Slow Accessories
Another thing that can make driving your vehicle frustrating is problems with the power accessories and components. Naturally, the alternator produces electricity for the electrical system so these components receive enough power to operate. If they slow down or malfunction, you may need a new alternator.
Warning Light
Finally, the check engine or battery light may turn on if the alternator is going bad. Usually, it’s the battery light. The engine control module turns on the light because of the problems we have discussed above. This is your main computer chip telling you you’ve got a problem.
